On this self drive holiday leave Phoenix-Scottsdale, the impressive metropolis with many cultural attractions and museums, and drive the scenic route through Tonto National Forest with its ranges of impressive vegetation. Take in the views of Sitgreaves National Forest at elevations of 3,000ft – 11,000ft on your way to Holbrook. From here visit The Petrified Forest National Park where vistas of green desert contrast with the red and purple of the mountains. Chinle resides at the entrance of the impressive Canyon de Chelly, ideal to trace the history of Native Americans. West of the canyon lies Kayenta from where you can reach Monument Valley with its soaring sandstone monoliths and cliff formations in shades of purples, reds and golds. Boating takes on new dimensions at Lake Powell with its 186 mile long waterway. Travelling south sees The Grand Canyon; this natural wonder offers a unique panorama and is the ‘Crown Jewel’ of Arizona. After a stay in the chic small town and artists mecca of Sedona, set amongst towering red rocks, travel south back to Phoenix-Scottsdale.
